WHAT IS THE NEWMAN GROUP
Newman Group is a CSM club which is a gathering of students, who have come together to share their faith journeys in a variety of ways.
Historically the Newman movement had its roots on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. A group of students seeing the need for spiritual growth as well as academic excellence formed the group and named it after John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890). John Newman was a college professor who converted to the Catholic Faith, and later, became a priest and then cardinal in the Church. Newman Centers now exist on many college campuses.
The purpose of the CSM Newman Group is to help our students grow in an awareness of God's Love in their lives and help them apply Christian principles to the subjects of their curriculum as well as their lives.
At different times and depending on student desires, different activities are stressed. Consequently, Newman strives to be diverse enough to meet the many different needs of CSM students. There are those who have serious questions concerning their faith journey and need to explore it in a deeper, more personal manner. There are those who enjoy gathering with others to Celebrate in Liturgy. There are those who take the Word of Jesus seriously and rather than just reading the Word of God in Scripture, wish to put their Faith into action through various forms of outreach to those in need.
Realizing the personal difficulties a person experiences during the college years, Newman provides opportunities for personal interaction where problems can be aired. Newman attempts to provide several events based on the desires of the students. Currently the primary point of contact is a weekly discussion period. But other activities such as the "Dinner and Mass" provide an opportunity to deepen our spiritual connection with God. God also created us for community and so we are also social beings as well. It is our nature to want to be with each other. That is why Newman also provides social events during the year such as movie nights or Ultimate Frisbee in the dark or the end of semester dinners. Even serving as the club's webmaster can be a source of growth.
Newman is an organization of mostly Christian/Catholic students, who, in a variety of ways, come together to grow in their faith journey and to share that journey with others.
